“André Jewson came to our school and from the outset made our students feel like real actors. With his warm and supportive style he took our performance to the next level, leaving our students with a memorable and fun filled experience.”
— Sarah Mildner, performing arts teacher
“André created productive and constructive classes where the actors could learn and achieve so much.”
— Jack, workshop participant
I am thrilled to be able to share my skills, experience and knowledge with the next generation of artists.
My workshops cater to all ages and levels of experience, is inclusive, and is tailored to the specific needs of each group. No matter the style, at the heart of the work is always a rigorous search for playfulness, openness and imaginative freedom.
In both psychologically and physically demanding theatrical styles, a sense of play is fundamental to an actor’s craft. When focused and connected, I believe that an actor at play makes bolder choices, takes greater risks, and is more absorbing to watch. Through games and improvisation, I work with students to develop a sense of play, leading to deep and vibrant onstage connections with other actors, the audience, and the text.
I have taught freelance for a number of years, at schools and independently. I have also taught for organisations such as Australian Theatre for Young People, Monkey Baa Theatre Company, Geelong Arts Centre, Off the Beaten Track, KF Dance and Centrestage Geelong.
Theatre, I believe, has the power to remind us of our universal connectedness and the joy of creativity; it is playful, it is honest, it is transformative. And it is these things that I seek to inspire in all the students with whom I have the pleasure to work.
